Surprise Proposal at The Lodge at Sonoma Resort

There’s something unforgettable about being in on a big secret, and this proposal at The Lodge at Sonoma Resort was one of those moments I’ll never forget.

The couple had flown in from out of state that same afternoon, their plane touched down around 4 p.m., and by 7:30 p.m., we were meeting under this massive heritage oak tree for what would turn into one of the happiest nights of their lives.

If you’ve never seen the oak tree at The Lodge, it’s stunning. Its branches stretch out wide and low, with lanterns hanging above that start to glow as the sun goes down. By the time I walked over to get into place, the light was soft and golden, and the whole space felt tucked away and peaceful, like it was waiting just for them.

Adam and I had been texting throughout the day to coordinate and make sure that we were still on schedule. He snapped a quick photo of their outfits so I would know who to look for because we had never officially met in person, and within a few minutes they were walking down the path to the oak tree.

And then, it happened. He asked, she said yes, and everything that followed was pure joy. She threw her arms around him, laughed through happy tears, and couldn’t stop smiling. He couldn’t either. These are the moments I love photographing most, the in between seconds, the real reactions that you can’t plan or pose.

Afterward, we wandered over to one of the most unique features... the dream wall. The idea is simple but beautiful. You write a note, tuck it into an empty wine bottle, and place it in the wall. Later, the notes are gathered up and turned into mulch, becoming part of the winery itself.

Adam had thought ahead and written a note earlier in the evening while Sara was still getting ready at the hotel. He pulled it out after the proposal, and together they read it. Instead of placing it in the wall, Sara decided to hold onto it as a keepsake to remember not only the proposal itself, but the thoughtfulness behind it. It was such a sweet way to close out the evening, and so fitting for a night already filled with so much meaning.

These two just radiate joy and positivity. They hugged, they laughed, Sara cried happy tears a few times, and you can see their happiness in the photos.

I know they’ll look back on these photos for years and feel the excitement all over again.

For anyone thinking about proposing in wine country, The Lodge at Sonoma is such a perfect spot. It’s intimate without being isolated, and the mix of California sunsets, oak trees, and a little wine country magic makes it a hard place to beat.

This night was one of those reminders of why I love what I do, being able to freeze the exact moment when two people’s lives change forever, and capturing the little details, like that handwritten note, that make their story completely their own.
